This interesting conversion popped up up in my Facebook feed recently and really piqued my interests.
The ad on Gumtree states that this vehcile started life as a 1977 Mk1 Golf, making it predate the Karmann factory produced Cabriolet by about 2 years (though it is unknown when the conversion took place). Seeing as it's a '77 model year it would probably have been an imported car, not from the VW Australia factory which ceased production in '76.
A brass plaque on the car states that it was "Designed and Converted by Boomerang Convertible Cars", a company which I cannot seem to find any information about on the internet at all.
An interesting design alteration is the addition of rectangular headlights which appear to be from a Holden WB Ute. WBs were produced from 1980 - 84 which may give more indication of when the conversion was done, but it is not known if the new lights appeared before or after the roof dissappeared. To add a little more chronological confusion, the decals on the side appear to be very early 90s.
The current owner is based South Australia and is selling the car for $1,100 AUD. The ad claims it needs a lot of work, but was running a year ago. If you're looking for a Mk1 project with some history and originality this could be the car for you!
As of writing on the 15 Sept. 2022 the car is still for sale: https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/st-peters/cars-vans-utes/1977-volkswagen-mk1-golf/1300929435
I am happy to report the car has found a new home and is undergoing restoration.
